The coastal life has many perks, and we certainly aren’t complaining about living in the Sunshine State and getting to experience what it means to live by the ocean. However, we have a bit more preparation that we need to take when it comes to severe weather.
Hurricane season is upon us, and we need to stay vigilant as a community to help each other through when a hurricane is predicted to make landfall.
While you can’t control the speed and severity of a hurricane, you can still prepare for it to minimize as much damage to your home and property as possible. Follow these tips so you can start preparing now ahead of the next dangerous hurricane.
Understanding Your Risk
There are different watches and warnings when it comes to tropical storms and hurricanes, and it is your responsibility to understand the alerts and terms that are associated with each of them. Thankfully, hurricanes often are recognized and communicated to us well before they make land, which gives us all time to get things together.
Hurricanes often come in waves in terms of severity, so knowing as early as possible gives you prep time to get things done. Starting two to three days out, you should start making lists and getting the supplies together that you will need to either evacuate or hunker down inside.
Securing and Prepping Your Home
You want to prevent as much damage to your home as possible, so trying to make it impermeable should be your priority. Cover your windows with hurricane shutters or wood and strap down your roof with clips or straps to help prevent severe wind damage.
In addition, be sure to remove everything off your property that is not tied down. That includes garbage cans, lawn furniture, outdoor equipment and children’s toys. Your garage might be packed to the brim for a few days, but that’s OK.
Once your home is ready, start preparing your family. If you are evacuating, pack all of the supplies and materials you would need for an extended time away.
Depending on the severity of the storm, the roads may not be passable for the following couple of days. If you are staying put, pack your family’s emergency kit with nonperishable food, water and things like batteries and medication. Pack whatever your family will need to live for a few days in comfort.
Recovering From Damage
Hurricanes can cause widespread damage, and flooding is one of those lingering issues that can continue to cause damage long after the hurricane is gone. Flooding and standing water in your home can quickly cause structural issues and mold growth if it is left to linger.
